Mescaline is a natural psychoactive substance capable of inducing very strong visions and hallucinations. Use of the cactus began as far back as 6000 years ago, making it the world's first used psychedelic, of course this cannot be said with 100% certainty.
The effects vary, with more negative effects being reported at higher doses. Indeed, it can cause very different physical, cognitive and visual effects.
The active ingredient (mescaline) is often compared to the effects of LSD. Most people use it for the colourful hallucinations it induces.
The only downside is that consuming the cactus is linked to nausea. However, it is an indispensable part as it is considered cleansing. In addition, mescaline is a stimulant, users become more energetic and feel like doing something.
How long it takes for it to start working obviously varies from person to person, on average it will take about 40 minutes or so to experience the primary effects of the cactus. These will last for up to the next 8 to 12 hours.
The oldest known method of psychedelic drug use is to consume a tea made from peyote. The root-top is cut off and dried to make disc-shaped cups. These will be chewed or soaked in water to make tea. Of course, it can also be consumed dried or raw but this is hugely bitter. An increasingly popular method is to grind the cactus into powder and put this into capsules. Keep out of reach of children!
